US and Mexico Face Intense Heatwave; South Africa Endures Deadly Floods
US · Published May 12, 2026
A significant heatwave is set to impact parts of the western United States and Mexico this week, driven by a ridge of high pressure.
Temperatures in California and Arizona are forecast to soar 10-15°C (18-27°F) above seasonal averages, with highs reaching 104-110°F (40-43°C) in areas like Palm Springs.
The US National Weather Service has issued heat advisories and extreme heat warnings for these regions, with the heat expected to shift eastward toward the Midwest later in the week.

Why It's Important?

The heatwave in the US and Mexico poses risks of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those without access to cooling. Infrastructure, including power grids, may also be strained. In South Africa, the ongoing heavy rainfall and strong winds have already caused widespread flooding, road closures, and power outages. Communities in the Western and Eastern Cape are at risk of further damage, including mudslides and rockfalls. Emergency shelters have been activated, and evacuations have occurred in areas like Gamtoos Valley. The severe weather has already claimed one life and displaced over 2,000 people.
